cornflake dreams.: January 2016

friday five.

Happy Friday! I'm linking up with ChristinaApril, and Natasha today to share five things:
makeup image via
ONE: I really liked this article that outlines what all those little labels on your beauty products mean. With my newfound knowledge I realized about 90% of the things in my makeup bag are wayyy past their expiration date...whomp whomp :(
TWO: I've been thinking about Podcasts lately. I haven't really listened to any (with the exception of Serial and This American Life). I'm taking notes from this and this list of Podcasts that all women should watch including Gilmore Guys. The show is hosted by two guys, one who has watched Gilmore Girls before and one who never has, dissecting the episodes and talking to people involved with the show...just another way to keep the gilmore love going.
THREE: Have you heard about Barbie's new shape? After almost 60 years Barbie is finally introducing dolls that have more realistic petite, tall, and curvy bodies. I grew up playing with Barbies and I'm happy about the change. Hopefully giving little girls (and boys) the opportunity to play with a variety of dolls will discourage extreme and unattainable beauty standards. A variety of dolls could also encourage more self acceptance, and awareness that beauty comes in different shapes and sizes.
FOUR: Baby Gap is having a big sale and I bought Vi an adorable coat for next winter (at more than half off!). Now I'm resisting the urge to buy all the heart things...
FIVE: When we visited Magnolia Plantation this week it made me want to visit other plantations in the area -- this is a great list of the top ten to visit.

Have a great weekend!

Magnolia Plantation and Gardens - Charleston, SC.

We visited Magnolia Plantation and Gardens on Monday. The Plantation was founded in 1676 by the Drayton family, and it covers over 450 acres. There are six different tour options -- including the main Plantation House, a Nature Train, Rice Field Boat Tour, former slave cabins, a Zoo and Nature Center, and the Audubon Swamp Garden.

But since we were limited with time before Violet's next nap, we focused on the gardens. Magnolia's public gardens are the oldest in America, they first opened to visitors in 1870. We had a great time walking around the grounds and looking at the bridges, the 100 year old cypress trees by the lake, the bamboo forest, and a small Biblical Garden. We also saw lots of pink, red, and white Camellias during our walk -- there are over 20,000 (!!) Camellias in the gardens. I want to come back later this Spring to see the Azaleas in bloom-- they are my favorite.

Overall the plantation was baby + stroller friendly -- we were able to walk around with our BOB stroller, with the exception of the main house and some of the smaller bridges. The bathrooms were clean and there was a changing table. And there was a small cafe on site with great lunch and snack options.
Visit Magnolia Plantation & Gardens: 3550 Ashley River Road, Charleston, SC 29414

p.s. Magnolia is offering a half price promotion for general admission with this coupon, until the end of January (locals take advantage of the deal and visit! It's going to be gorgeous this weekend.)

on my wish list.

It's been awhile since I've done a wish list post. Here are the things that have been hanging out in my shopping bag, begging me to take them home:

single felt flower headband for Violet - these adorable little headbands are under $10!

drapey long sleeve tee - as if I don't have enough long sleeve shirts, but I like the bold cobalt color.

perfect-fit scoopneck tee - the perfect tee to wear with a pair of cute flare jeans.

rebecca minkoff large suki crossbody bag - this is a nice alternative to a pricier bag I've wanted for years.

rebecca minkoff regan crossbody bag - another good crossbody option.

kate spade new york jillian dress for Violet - I LOVE this sweet little dress.. but I don't love the price. Hopefully it goes on sale (this is another cute and more affordable option).

marc fisher LTD crystal tassel sandals - These sandals would look great with jeans or a dress! They make me wish I had a tropical vacation booked for Spring.

midnight blue felt bow headband for Violet - another cute felt headband, this one is under $5.

hatha bra - I love the abstract inkblot print on this sports bra! I also like that it has convertible straps so you can have options beyond just racerback.

What's on your wish list?

friday five.

Happy Friday! I'm linking up with ChristinaApril, and Natasha today to share five things:
ONE: I've been craving Mexican food like crazy lately... sounds like the perfect time to try some new healthy recipes!
TWO: I have recently developed some wrinkles around my eyes (aka sleep-deprived-first-time-mom-smile-lines). So I'm looking for some serious eye cream, and considering buying one of these: Neutrogena Ageless Intensives Deep Wrinkle Eye CreamPatricia Wexler M.d. Dermatology Intensive 3-in-1, Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair EyeKiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment or Fresh Black Tea Age Delay Eye ConcentrateBut I'd love to hear your favorites!
THREE: I finally finished watching the entire series of Gilmore Girls last week. I liked how the series ended but I'm sad it's over. I really hope the rumored revival comes on soon. (Also I couldn't stop thinking about how real life Rory married Pete from Mad Men!) In the meantime I started season 4 of VEEP.
FOUR: Violet still loves story time, which makes me SO happy. She helps turn the book pages -- cutest thing ever. And she is all about her interactive "touch and feel" books. She received new books for Christmas (and they don't drive me batty to read over and over again): The Gruffalo, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?The Little Girl Who Lost Her NameShe also loves her LeapFrog Shapes and Sharing Picnic BasketStacking Rings, and First Blocks Shape Sorter set.
FIVE: I finished Mindy Kaling's new book Why Not Me and I really liked it. Next up on my reading list: The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P. / The Marriage of Opposites / The Martian / The Royal We

Have a great weekend! And to all of my East Coast friends, stay safe during the winter storm.

minted first birthday invitation picks.

Violet's first birthday is less than two months away! I was originally going to keep her birthday celebration small with some donuts and trip to the park since we don't have any family nearby. But then I got sucked into Pinterest and figured why not throw a party -- it is her first birthday after all! That and I love any excuse to make (and eat!) appetizers and desserts. It will also be nice to have our Charleston friends over and have the grandparents visit. So now I need to pick an invitation. Minted has so many cute children's invitation options it's hard to pick a favorite!:

Which option is your favorite?

etsy valentine's day favorites.

Sooo two Etsy posts in two weeks… #obsessed. But I couldn't help myself. When I was lost in ballerina world last week I found a ton of cute pink, red, and white Valentine’s Day things. And it's not secret I'm a huge fan of that color combo :) I'm excited to celebrate the holiday with Vi this year.

p.s more Valentine's favorites from last year.

weekend good things.

Hello Monday! The weekend flew by but it was full of lots of good things:Loving: Leftover cupcakes from Sugar Bakeshop :) the coconut cupcake was my favorite.
Watching: H and I finally started watching VEEP and it's hilarious. I wish we didn't wait so long to get on board with the show. Also Kate + Leo winning their Golden Globes last night gave me all the #myheartwillgoon feels last night (now I need to catch up and watch all the winning movies).

Shopping for baby: Baby Bjorn Bibs are ahhhhmazing. (I never thought I'd be so excited about a bib). But they are great for messy mealtimes -- especially if your baby is still learning how to drink from a cup without spilling. I also love this felt flower headband.

Shopping for mama: I've had a few misses lately but I love my new leopard leggings, this cap-sleeve swing top, and my personalized 2016 notebook.
Eating: I had the opportunity to try Mercantile & Mash over the weekend! The food emporium is located in Charleston's newly renovated Cigar Factory and the industrial West Elm decor reminded me of Chicago -- so it was love at first sight. The food was good too! We had carry-out for two: the Bone In Cheshire Pork Chop with South Carolina BBQ Glaze, with Herbed Confit Fingerling Potatoes, Bourbon Buttered Mushrooms and a Baby Greens Salad with Bosc Pear, Blue Cheese, Toasted Walnuts, and Honey Vinaigrette. The BBQ Glaze and Honey vinaigrette was soo good. I'd love to go back to again sometime for lunch or brunch with the girls.

Planning: Violet's FIRST Birthday Party! I can't believe our little baby girl will ONE in two months.

How was your weekend?

loving lately: baby ballerinas.

I had a completely different post planned for this week, and then I got distracted by Baby Gap's new line of adorable ballerina clothes. And then I fell down the Etsy hole searching for everything ballerina. yep, the struggle is real.

I actually haven't bought Violet a lot of "girly" toys because H and I want her to have the opportunity to play with whatever she wants -- whether that be blocks, trucks, or dolls. We want to give her options outside of "pink" and "princess". I grew up with two brothers in a house full of Legos and Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles, so I played with those toys and Barbies. But I still have a soft spot for ballerinas -- so I wouldn't mind if that was one her first dolls :)
Ella ballerina doll / ballerina tank dress / wrap knit cardigan + tulle skirt leggings - I bought this set for Vi! / mary jane flats / ballet socks / crocheted bunny ballerina - I love how the ear can be personalized / Willow Crowns champagne leather bow - from one of my favorite small shops + where I buy most of Violet's headbands / ballet prints

new year, new workout gear.

I started 2016 with some simple resolutions -- and yes, one of them was to workout more. I made some time for yoga yesterday and it was wonderful. It also made me want to invest in a new sports bra -- the two I own have seen better days. Here's some cute workout clothes that'll make you want to dress up for the gym (or a Netflix marathon):
Zella Z6 Long Sleeve Tee / Zella Pirouette Cross Back Tee - I love the back on this top / Nike Gym Vintage Zip Front Hoodie - I have this in dark gray and it's sooo soft and comfy / GapFit Breathe Ballet Longsleeve Tee - currently in my shopping bag.
Nike Lotus Epic Run Crop Leggings - I own these and I LOVE them. They are really comfortable and have a convenient pocket with a zipper on the waistband, and the leopard pattern is really cute. / Zella Live In Slim Fit Capris - the bright purple is a nice change from standard black workout pants / Zella Ling In Inspire Slim Fit Capris - in black and white stripes / Zulla Fusion Capri - these have fun mesh insets around the legs.
Did you resolve to work out more in 2016?
