friday five.

Happy Friday! I'm linking up with ChristinaApril, and Natasha today to share five things on my mind:
ONE: I haven't watched any Halloween movies yet and I love Tim Burton movies -- especially Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Edward Scissorhands. I hope H is up for a movie marathon this weekend.
glow-in-the-dark skeleton one piece / patterned footed sleepers: boo! + skeleton
TWO: Having a baby around during the holidays is so much fun. I love all of the adorable holiday themed pj's! Old Navy has really cute (and affordable) options.
THREE: We carved Violet's pumpkin last night and now we have a ton of seeds to roast! Growing up I loved to carve pumpkins, but I would never eat the seeds -- much to my dad's disappointment. To be honest I don't even know if I ever actually tasted the seeds...I guess I was a picky kid. Now that my palate has evolved (ha!) I thought I'd give them a try -- smothered in sugar and cinnamon of course.
FOUR: We just ordered this highchair from IKEA -- I love it. It's easy to clean and compact so it doesn't take up a ton of room in our kitchen. Violet also loves her wooden baby gym. And they have a lot of other simple and cute toys -- shape sorter, soft stacking rings, bead roller coaster, wood stacking rings, stuffed elephant.
FIVE: Our neighborhood is having a block party on Saturday (yahh!) and I need to bring a treat. I would love to make something really festive and cute (peeps ghost browniesspider cookies / ghost cupcakes) but I am not a great baker or crafty #aintnobodygottimeforthat. So I'll probably make boxed brownies or cupcakes and go crazy with the orange sprinkles ;) Here's hoping another neighbor will bring the cute desserts.

Have a great weekend + Happy Halloween!

baby's first halloween costume.

As soon as I saw Pottery Barn Kids' Skunk costume I knew it would be Violet's first Halloween costume. And it looked pretty familiar -- I posted about it in 2010 (!!!) I guess I've had babies on the brain for a while now. So I'm happy they are still making it (and TBH I think the new costume is even cuter than the old version!) That's not to say the it's perfect -- for an expensive costume the head was HUGE (as in it fit me!! -- which is totally crazy since it was a 6-9 month size). I had to get crafty and make a few adjustments with the glue gun. It turned out to be an easy fix. I decided glue a pink bow near the skunk Mohawk (so it was clear she was the lady skunk). And I dressed her in a pair of heart polka dot leggings, and a long sleeve onesie, and rose gold Freshly Picked moccasins to complete the costume.

We met up with Violet's boyfriend Pepe Le Pew last weekend and took a couple of photos of the two skunks together-- it was too cute!!
skunk costume sold out (similar option 1 and 2) / pumpkin treat bag sold out (similar) / rose gold moccasins c/o freshly picked / black and white heart polka dot leggings sold out (similar) / boo-tiful black long-sleeve onesie / pink bow (similar)

I'm really happy with how the costume came together and I can't wait to dress up our little stinker again this weekend for trick-or-treating!

loving lately: black and white.

I'm pretty sure I wear a lot more black than the average Southern girl. I tend to skip the bright greens, pinks, and bold Lily Pulitzer patterns (which are cute -- just not for me). I prefer classic colors in the black, white, gray, and navy family. And now that it's Fall (!!) my wardrobe choices don't seem so out of place. Here are some of my favorite black and white finds:

cambridge satchel small cloud bag (this purse is on my Christmas wishlist -I love the scallop detail) / openweave buffalo check scarf / kate spade metro goldtone & leather watch (again loving that pretty scallop detail) / andie over the knee boots (these are currently in my shopping bag -- I'm hoping they aren't too tall for me) / striped boatneck tee (this could be the perfect 3/4 sleeve stripe tee) /  baby buffalo plaid jacket (for my mini-me) / cat face baby flats (how cute are these flats?! and they are under $10!) / stripe body con dress (I wish I had a reason to buy this dress -- the wrap top and ruched waist looks so flattering)

What are your favorite colors to wear?

weekend good things.

life has been really good lately.
H took his boards exam on Friday (!!!) We celebrated with burgers at Poe's Tavern on Sullivan's Island (our favorite). I always order the pimento cheeseburger with fries and it never disappoints. Afterwards we walked over to the beach and let Violet play around in the water. That baby is fearless when it comes to the ocean -- she loves putting her feet in the sand and watching the water and waves. It's adorable. And it reminds me we need to sign her up for swimming lessons soon! The weather was perfect -- the sun was shining, but it was breezy so it didn't get too hot. And it was really relaxing (note to self: visit the beach more often!) Later that night, H and I watched the indie flick Short Term 12 (I cried), and we did some major damage to H's cookie cake.

On Saturday we met up with our friends (and Violet's boyfriend) at the Boone Hall's Pumpkin Patch. We got some adorable photos of the babies playing around in the straw surrounded by pumpkins. And Violet got to see some farm animals, the baby goats were a hit. H and I watched another movie -- In Bruges, and I added Belgium to our travel wish list. Sunday was low key -- I worked on some projects, H watched soccer, and we FaceTimed with family.

friday five.

Happy Friday! I'm linking up with Christina, April, and Natasha today to share five things on my mind:
recycled pics from instagram
ONE: H takes his fellowship board exam today!! He has been studying for it for months and it's his last major test for the next 9 years. I am so happy for him and we're going to celebrate with burgers at Poe's and a cookie cake with extra frosting!! On Saturday we're meeting up with Violet's boyfriend at the pumpkin patch. And if the weather cooperates we're going to the beach on Sunday :)
TWO: I'd love to add a few new books to our coffee table: Humans of New York Stories (currently 40% off!), Styled by Emily Henderson, and Audrey at Home: Memories of My Mother's Kitchen (includes recipes!).
STS Blue Nikki Flare Leg Skinny Jean (under $60) / Joe's Flawless Icon Flare Jeans (I have a pair of skinny Joe's jeans that I love, so I want to try this pair) / Treasure&Bond High Rise Flare Jean (I really like this dark rinse) / Paige Denim Transcend Canyon High Rise Bell Bottom Jean

THREE: How do you feel about flares coming back into style? I love the trend, so I'm really excited to pack away my skinny jeans and give my ankles a breather. I think I even want to try a pair of high-waisted flares (yep. like my mom wore in the 70's!) Joanna from Cup of Jo sold me on the trend -- she loves them and says: "They suck your belly in. They don’t stretch out as easily. You never get plumber’s crack!" sounds good to me.
FOUR: Eventually I want to get new sheets for our master bedroom and I'd love to get something printed and fun. I love this set from Dwell Studio: block print floral sheet set (just not the price). I'm also considering the organic mini diamond print from West Elm or simple and simple and affordable stripes from Target.

Have a great weekend!

Lulujo Baby Modern Collection Swaddle Giveaway.

Full Disclosure: I received complimentary items from Lulujo Baby to review. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you for supporting brands that support Cornflake Dreams.

I'm back with another review and giveaway for one of my favorite companies: Lulujo Baby. They recently released the Modern Collection -- it's a pretty line of bamboo swaddles with simple designs in classic black and white. The fabrics are gender neutral and don't scream "baby" -- they are perfect for the modern mama.
The bamboo swaddles are pre-washed, and they get softer with each use. Violet loves the silky soft texture and I love how versatile the swaddles are. They can be used as a blanket, a nursing cover, a change mat, a stroller cover, and of course a swaddle. The collection includes a Black Messy Stripe, a playful Panda print, and my personal favorite: the Hugs & Kisses (xo) print. I like to keep our swaddle in the media room/playroom as an extra lightweight blanket for the carpet or couch:
You can enter to win a set of all (3) Swaddles from the Lulujo Baby Modern Collection. Please use the Rafflecopter widget below to enter. A winner will be emailed on Tuesday, October 20, 2015. This giveaway open to U.S. and Canadian residents.

Good Luck!

weekend good things.

Happy Monday! H has the day off today so I'm going to make this post short and sweet.
We had a pretty good weekend -- we went out for Greek food on Saturday (the gyros and almond cookies at Olympik Restaurant and Bakery did not disappoint!). I did some yard work (yawn), Vi got to swing on our swingset, it rained (again), and we watched Bloodline. I started also started reading After You -- but then I took a break to re-read The Sleepeasy Solution after Vi had a few rocky nights of sleep. COI mamas tell me your nap secrets!! On Sunday I met up with Shelby for lunch at a nearby Mexican restaurant and I ate way too many chips + salsa. Later that day H and I made some adjustments to Vi's crib (we finally had to lower it because she can pull herself up! And we moved her botanical name and flower garlands to another spot in her nursery).

baby cornflake's nursery reveal

Violet's nursery was a labor of love. and waiting. She didn't have her own room until she was over three months old (after we moved into our house). And then we kept her crib in our room for a few months. But when we finally finished decorating the nursery and moved her in, it quickly became my favorite room in our house.

The nursery looks pretty similar to the inspiration board that I made when I was pregnant. I did make two changes: I switched the pink Pakistani rug with a gray dotted rug from Target. It was a total steal for under $80. And I ditched the blue and green map print after my mom gave me a pink print with the Beatles lyrics: "Golden slumbers fill your eyes, smiles awake you when you rise, sleep pretty darling do not cry and i will sing a lullaby." I LOVE that song and the print adds a nice pop of pink to the neutral room.

I shopped for all of the other pieces throughout my pregnancy, and I am really happy with how well everything came together. It's the perfect gray and white, jungle-inspired nursery for our little girl.

peanut butter and oat kiss cookies (and a giveaway!)

Full Disclaimer: I received complimentary items from Peanut Butter & Co. to facilitate this post. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you for supporting brands that support Cornflake Dreams.

One of my all-time favorite cookies are Peanut Butter Blossoms. My mom always makes them for Christmas, so I associate them with the holidays. I found a simple recipe for peanut butter oat cookies that uses only FIVE ingredients, so I thought it would be the perfect base for a little chocolate. Desserts are always better with chocolate and peanut butter! I used two of my favorite Peanut Butter & Co. flavors -- Cinnamon Raisin Swirl and Smooth Operator and they gone within a few days.
Recipe adapted via
Ingredients:
1/2 cup Peanut Butter (I used 1/4 cup Smooth Operator Peanut Butter and 1/4 cup Cinnamon Raisin Swirl for a hint of cinnamon and raisins)
1/2 cup Brown Sugar
1 large Egg
1 1/4 cups Bob's Red Mill Organic Old Fashioned Rolled Oats
1/2 tsp Baking Soda
24 Hershey's Kisses

METHOD:
In a small bowl, cream peanut butter and brown sugar until fluffy. Beat in egg. Add oats and baking soda to creamed mixture; mix well. Drop by tablespoonfuls 2 in. apart onto greased baking sheets. Bake at 350° for 6-8 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool. Immediately place an unwrapped Kisses candy into center of each cookie. Store in an airtight container. This recipe makes about 2 dozen cookies. Enjoy!

Peanut Butter & Co. is giving away 2 jars of peanut butter: Smooth Operator and Cinnamon Raisin Swirl + 1 package of Bob’s Red Mill Organic Old Fashioned Rolled Oats so you can get baking :) Please use the Rafflecopter widget below to enter. A winner will be emailed on November 2, 2015. This giveaway is open to U.S. residents.

Good Luck!

life lately.

I took a little blogging break last week. It totally wasn't planned, but I'll admit it was really nice to spend that extra time with Vi :) Here's an update on what I have been up to lately:

Loving: Visitors! My brother-in-law and his wife stopped by for a quick visit last week on their way down to Miami. It was so nice to spend some time with them and have them meet Violet.
images via + via
Loathing: The rain. Charleston and other areas in South Carolina experienced a historic "once in 200 years rainfall event" over the weekend. The downtown peninsula was shut down and there was major flash floods and power outages throughout the weekend. Many homes experienced major flooding and damage. I am so thankful that we are ok and aside from some minor flooding in our backyard, our house made it through the storm without any damage. The whole thing freaked me out -- I hope we never have to experience a full fledged hurricane.

Looking forward to: The HOLIDAYS! I've always been a big fan of Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, and now that we have a baby in the house it makes them even more exciting. And now it's finally appropriate to buy things off my fall Etsy wishlist :)
Watching: Difficult People and The Mindy Project on Hulu. Bloodline on Netflix. Blackish, The Goldbergs, and Fresh Off the Boat (I'm so happy most of my friends are back on TV -- now I'm just waiting for the season premiere of Jane the Virgin).
Reading: Humans of New York Refugee Stories. They are incredibly heartbreaking and hard to read, but they shouldn't be ignored.
Shopping: I just bought a Halloween book and a plaid dress for Violet. And thanks to Laura's suggestion I picked up two plaid shirts from a store I never thought I'd be shopping at after I left high school (but the shirts are really cute and soft AND the low price tag doesn't hurt).
Baby Update: Violet has such a little personality and she is hilarious. She likes to curl her tongue and makes weird sounds (including dada!) and laughs at herself. It's adorable. She also started to make some progress sleeping at night and then she regressed. A lot. So after trying to rock her to sleep for hours, we finally decided to try the cry-it-out method. It broke our hearts to hear her cry, but so far it's working. She is getting better at self-soothing and we all sleep better at night (which makes for a much happier family during the day!)

I have some fun post to look forward to this week: a recipe + giveaway and Violet's nursery reveal (finally!!)
