cornflake dreams.: life lately.

life lately.

I took a little blogging break last week. It totally wasn't planned, but I'll admit it was really nice to spend that extra time with Vi :) Here's an update on what I have been up to lately:

Loving: Visitors! My brother-in-law and his wife stopped by for a quick visit last week on their way down to Miami. It was so nice to spend some time with them and have them meet Violet.

Loathing: The rain. Charleston and other areas in South Carolina experienced a historic "once in 200 years rainfall event" over the weekend. The downtown peninsula was shut down and there was major flash floods and power outages throughout the weekend. Many homes experienced major flooding and damage. I am so thankful that we are ok and aside from some minor flooding in our backyard, our house made it through the storm without any damage. The whole thing freaked me out -- I hope we never have to experience a full fledged hurricane.

Looking forward to: The HOLIDAYS! I've always been a big fan of Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, and now that we have a baby in the house it makes them even more exciting. And now it's finally appropriate to buy things off my fall Etsy wishlist :)
Watching: Difficult People and The Mindy Project on Hulu. Bloodline on Netflix. Blackish, The Goldbergs, and Fresh Off the Boat (I'm so happy most of my friends are back on TV -- now I'm just waiting for the season premiere of Jane the Virgin).
Reading: Humans of New York Refugee Stories. They are incredibly heartbreaking and hard to read, but they shouldn't be ignored.
Shopping: I just bought a Halloween book and a plaid dress for Violet. And thanks to Laura's suggestion I picked up two plaid shirts from a store I never thought I'd be shopping at after I left high school (but the shirts are really cute and soft AND the low price tag doesn't hurt).
Baby Update: Violet has such a little personality and she is hilarious. She likes to curl her tongue and makes weird sounds (including dada!) and laughs at herself. It's adorable. She also started to make some progress sleeping at night and then she regressed. A lot. So after trying to rock her to sleep for hours, we finally decided to try the cry-it-out method. It broke our hearts to hear her cry, but so far it's working. She is getting better at self-soothing and we all sleep better at night (which makes for a much happier family during the day!)

I have some fun post to look forward to this week: a recipe + giveaway and Violet's nursery reveal (finally!!)

 How was your weekend?

  11. Oh wow. That flooding is insane! I'm so glad you guys were safe and don't have much damage to your property. So crazy. When I was there I saw some minor flooding downtown from a rainy day so I can only imagine how bad it got! <3, Pamela Sequins & Sea Breezes

  12. That flooding is crazy! I have been in a news hole and hadn't seen actual pictures of the flooding in Charleston. So glad to hear you all are ok! That Abercrombie shirt is soo unexpected! It looks super cute--so not the A&F I rememeber in High School because it would have been shown with a lacy tank top underneath it/ lacy bra hanging out ;) Glad to hear the little one is sleeping better. My son is a horrible sleeper and I know it is totally my fault. We tried to do sleep training at 4 months and then regressed. We are going to try again at 6 months. I used to live in CHI too but now live in WI. Hope you are enjoying the warmer fall weather down there!

  14. The HONY refugee stories are incredible. What brave people. Glad you're okay after all the flooding - it's certainly been crazy. I heard some crazy stat that said SC hasn't seen rain this bad in 1000 years. How do they even measure that?! haha

  18. Hope y'all dry out soon! Crazy that someone is using a canoe because of the rain.

Hope Vi's sleep schedule gets back in order soon. We leave toys and things in Sophie's crib and it seems to help her calm down if she randomly wakes up in the night. She has night terrors so we usually go in there and comfort her, but having her stuffed animal toys next to her to cuddle with when we can't.

  26. I'm so glad to hear that you and your family are safe and that there was no damage to your place! The news has been showing a little bit of what's going on there and it's definitely scary!

  27. Glad you all are safe and sound! Flooding is no joke. I actually bought one of those plaid shirts from A&F last fall and I LOVE IT! I saw a buffalo check plaid shirt at Madewell that I wanted but the price tag was super high and then I walked by A&F and saw the exact same shirt for about 30 dollars less and I was sold! I bought a large to get a slouchier look and it fits great and is super soft!! Might have to buy another one!

  31. I LOVE Mindy Project and am so happy that Hulu picked it up. She's such a visionary and a great writer.

So happy to hear you and your family are OK. My grandmother is in Myrtle and she seemed to fair well but my aunt in Columbia lives two streets over from the creek that flooded so bad and is thankful that her house was not one of the ones under water. Her crawl space flooded and their outbuilding in the back was under water. It's so tragic.
