craving: chicago style comfort food.

If you follow me on Instagram you know that last week I received a pretty amazing delivery from my parents. They sent Portillo's Italian roast beef sandwiches and Lou Malnati's deep dish pizza and the timing couldn't have been more perfect.
DINNER: Portillo's - Lou Malnati's - Vienna Beef Hot Dogs
Springtime in Charleston is beautiful and the weather is great, but I'll be honest, even with April flurries (crazy!) I miss Chicago. We couldn't spend Easter with family this year and even though we chatted via FaceTime, it just wasn't the same. H felt the same way and we were more than happy to eat our feelings and have Portillo's the other night for dinner. Its probably for the best they don't ship their chocolate cake...  that would be troubleMy mom and grandparents are visiting in just a few weeks (early June!!) I can't wait to have one of best parts of Chicago (family) here in Charleston! Until then I'll help myself to another Chicago favorite (deep dish pizza) and maybe I'll order some dessert.

What is your favorite food from your hometown*?
How do you deal with being away from family?

*For those of you who are new here, no I didn't grow up in downtown Chicago. Like a lot of Chicagoans I grew up in Chicagoland...45 minutes west of the city in a very small town. But I lived and worked downtown after college for 8 years until I moved to Charleston last summer. So I get to call both places home :)

  1. This looks amazing!! I am the same about missing food from home. Pizza and bagels just aren't good in Pittsburgh, and every time I go home to NJ or someone comes to visit I have them bring our favorite local pizza and bagels.

  7. That was so sweet of them to send that. I don't think it matters where you grow up - you develop a love for the food that reminds you of childhood (even if it is crappy food). I grew up in LI and I crave the food from this sandwich place and a chinese spot out there. I am sure it is not special but it reminds me of home, lol.

  8. I really miss Long Island bagels and NY pizza. I'm so sorry but I don't like the pizza here at all. And I don't understand why they cut it into squares!! Anyways... That hot dog has me drooling!! Love Portillos!!! I have not tried italian beef though, that will be my next thing. Terry's toffee is really good too. :-)

  10. Oh my gosh YES! I've been missing Chicago a lot lately, too... even though I was just there last weekend haha - what I would give for a piece of Portillo's chocolate cake right now! Can we meet there and just eat our way through the city?!?

  12. I am so jealous that you are able to get food from home so easily!! It is so hard for me to buy Australian stuff and it's almost all processed and I can't get the stuff I really want (desserts etc) but really, you're right - the best part is family and I'm glad they are coming to visit soon!

My mother is always bringing up my favorite Virginia Ham or Cheese Shop dressing. I hide that stuff and ration it out!!!

  21. Oh, I totally own both DC and the DC suburbs as "where I grew up." And I get so mad when people are like, "no, where did you REALLY grow up?" as if they're trying to catch me out in a lie. COME ON, PEOPLE. YOU DON'T KNOW ME OR MY ROUTINE FROM AGES 5 to 18. PLEASE.

    (Yay for visiting family!)
