Charleston ghosts, graveyards, and brunch.

It cooled down in Charleston this weekend to the lower 50's which was a refreshing change from non-stop upper 80's. On Friday night I was thrilled we got a few (adorable) trick-or-treaters before we went out for our Ghost and Graveyard tour. The tour was kind of corny but it was interesting to learn a little bit about one of the city's oldest graveyards. On Saturday it rained most of the day, so we ran some errands and snuggled in for the night with Ben & Jerry's and a few episodes of House of Cards (Frank Underwood you seriously freak me out!)
On Sunday I met up with Caitlyn and Ally at Poogan's Porch for Brunch. I ordered the cinnamon french toast and sausage. It was SO good and I love that they serve complimentary biscuits (my favorite!) I can't wait to go back and try the Pimento grilled cheese. Later that afternoon H and I returned to some of the spots we visited on our Ghosts and Graveyard tour -- including Charleston's oldest graveyard:

The Circular Church Graveyard (located at 150 Meeting Street) was established in 1681 and has over 500 gravestones dating back to 1695. The majority of the burials are for people born before 1880. It's amazing that most of gravestones are still legible -- according to our tour guide many of the headstones are made from slate, which is extremely durable. The inscriptions on the slate headstones have also survived over the years because Charleston doesn't suffer from constant severe icy weather.
A church graveyard might not be at the top of everyone's tourist to-do list in Charleston, but it's worth seeing as a reminder of Charleston's historic past.

  2. House of Cards is so good! I loved all of the little cemeteries around Charleston and I really wanted to do a ghost tour, but Dave wasn't on board. I think it'd be awesome (even if it's a little campy).

  5. That church is beautiful! I actually find old graveyards fascinating! We did a similar graveyard tour last year and it was kind of cheesy but also really cool to hear all of the stories and history!

  12. Wow, talk about a great Halloween weekend! I haven't seen any episodes of House of Cards, would you consider the show to be like Scandal? I love that you guys did that graveyard tour, my ex and I did that last year and it was a blast for Halloween. I'm so happy to get back into blogging, I love reading about everyone's weekend.

  13. I definitely want to go on one of the ghost tours, even just to learn more about Charleston's history. I did see a funny sign outside a cemetery the other night on my way to dinner that said "the only ghost here is the Holy Ghost." On our way back, there were 3 tours standing outside the cemetery talking about it. haha ... so I guess that might not be the only ghost!

  15. Yum to your brunch choice! Y'all need to stop by the Historic Preservation Society. That's who we took a book tour with for The Invention of Wings and it was phenomenal. Just a little history buff tip from me to you ;)

  17. That french toast looks amazing!! Thanks for making this preggo hungry. Only an hour till lunch...

I also prefer corny tours to scary ones! Why anyone puts themselves in a position to be scared for fun baffles me :)
