trip tips: greece.

We're off to Greece in 10 days! I've been so distracted by work that I haven't had time to think about our trip or research the best places to visit. We are starting our trip in Santorini and then traveling to Athens for 3 days. We plan to take in the gorgeous views of the caldera and sunsets in Santorini and see the major ruins in Athens. I'd also love to buy some authentic leather sandals in Athens, eat LOTS of feta, tomato and pita bread and take a dip in the Mediterranean Sea but i'm sure there are lots of other things to do.

I'd love your advice... what should we see? eat? buy?!

  1. Oh Greece - I LOVE IT!!! It's been a few years, err like 6 since I last went but let me think! Definitely order a 'village salad' or three (It's tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, feta, drizzled with EVOO, sometimes served with warm pita - I lived on it!), souvlaki, yougurt with honey (it's popular state side now, I had it for the first time over there - it's so much better!) and kefdeves (sp?) - little meatballs -YUMM! The corner bakeries, like most of Europe are divine! Definitely get a great pair of sandals - there are a ton of shops in Athens! Also frappe - a greek iced coffee. And spices - i brought home the best dried oregano from a market in Athens! And HAVE FUN!!!!

  3. Love Greece!!!! When in Athens, eat in the Plaka area, it's at the base of the parthenon (i think, it's been a few years since we went!). Santorini is amazing...sunsets in Oia, walking along the villages, the feta! We rented a car one day, and drove to the other side of the caldera, and explored the different beaches. But if you've got a room with a patio/view...I suggest you allow yourself some time to just sit and soak it up. We were go, go, go, and that's the one thing I wish we'd done more. Opa!!

  7. Santorini is AMAZING you will love it. Try to get out and about before or after the cruise ships dock, otherwise the streets are crazy packed with tourists. I don't remember any specific places we ate - we just wandered around - but you will find delicious food everywhere! We rented a car at the base of the island at the tip of another traveler on our ferry, so that we could explore the island. Not sure if I would do that again ONLY because the drive to the top, in a stick shift is quite harrowing. (You'll see what I mean.) But, you should definitely check out the black sand beaches and if you're a runner/hiker, check out the trail from Fira and Oia. (I think those are the two towns...) The sunsets are fabulous and just be prepared to take lots and lots of pictures.

  8. ...ah okay, I found the trail. It's six miles between Fira and Oia. I remember Runners World doing a "Rave Run" segment on it after my trip. We hiked part of it and watched the sunset. Grand!

  11. I love Greece, Santorini is my favorite! Frappes are great, especially this time of year and don't miss the market place when you're in Athens, so much fun! Also yogurt and honey and street gyros are must-haves.

  15. I'm dying to go to Greece! Jon's been a bunch (easy and cheap when you live in England) so I'm really going to have to push for it... or maybe trade him somewhere in the US that I've been to and he wants to visit, like Chicago :P

  17. Greece is the best and you scheduled your time perfectly! Go here for sandals in Athens (http://www.melissinos-poet.com/eng/press.html) - he'll fit them to your feet and they're only a few euros more than the crappy touristy ones in the rest of Plaka. You can do more of the ruins in one day in Athens (they're all clustered together) but make sure you get up to Syntamga sqaure (parliament) and see the old Olympic stadium. Biggest tip for Athens -- don't be intimidated by the map! It looks huge, but everything is really walkable and the trolleys are a great way to get around if your feet are tired (the little kiosks sell tickets -- they're small and yellow and like one euro each). Eat lots of Greek salads. Don't pay more than five euros for a gyro (unless you're in a sit down restaurant) or you've been had. For Santorini, a rental car is a great way to see all the different kind of beaches (black sand, red sand, rock) and the lighthouse point - we did a SmartCar and it was perfect. Most of all, sit out in the sun and have a blast!!
