i finally joined a book club (YAH!). confession: i am not a huge reader - i prefer to spend my extra time pinning, blogging and watching tv---argh i know, i know. so when i got the chance to join a group of chicago girls for a monthly meeting (complete with wine + dinner) i jumped at the chance. the first meeting was a lot of fun- we read sarah's key- an emotional story about the disturbing Vel' d'Hiv' roundup in paris during world world II and a modern journalist's obsession with the tragic events of the past. i really enjoyed the book and i would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about the Vel d'Hiv and the occupation of France during the war.
in our book club each member of the group takes a turn and hosts dinner and we vote on which book we'll read for that meeting.
this month's options are
i am leaning towards hunger games because i stilll haven't read it AND the movie is coming out soon.
have you read any of these books?
do you have any other must-read recommendations?

jillian

My recommendation is definitely the Hunger Games! :)
Joining a book club sounds fun. I love to ready, but must admit that I also prefer my free time to be spent pinning, blogging and DVR-ing. Getting away from the screen is so nice once I actually do it though!
The Hunger Games is amazing! I've also heard really good things about Unbroken.
I would definitely do Hunger Games. Quick, easy entertaining read. And yeah! The movie comes out soon.
If you're like me you'll tear through hunger games in one sitting =) Its so fast-paced and super exciting to the point where you want to know what happens - STAT! I have read and re-read the entire series... so in love! Originally I started them b/c my husband was in training over a year ago and his training reminded me of scenes from the book, after that I was in. love =)
I want to join a book club so badly! right now i just choose at random from amazon.com and so far i've loved nearly all the books i've read! yay!
i haven't read any of those, but all my friends want me to read the hunger games so it must be good. :) what a fun book club!
I love The Hunger Games and you will, too!! It's so good.
My book club read Rules of Civility back in November, and everyone raved about it! I felt like we had a lot of great discussion points based on the themes. Book clubs are so much fun - especially when there is wine and dinner involved!
hunger games is a great book and super quick read. But you will HAVE to read the other two.
Unbroken is amazing. I literally made facial expressions while reading and the boy thought I was crazy. You learn a TON in it but it's long!
That's I confess that I am also not a big reader, but you have inspired me to consider a book club! What a great way to meet new people, too! XO brynn
You MUST read the Hunger Games. You will love it! It's so incredibly entertaining!
Unbroken is really good too!
our book club read The Hunger Games & it was one of the few books pretty much everyone read! Its a quicker read & addictive.
Plus, not as depressing as Sarah's Key :)
Hunger games! I love it when you can read a book and then see the movie.
Hunger games is my next book! I can't wait to get started!
What a fun activity to do! I have always wanted to join a book club.

and i JUST finished hunger games (book 1) last week-INCREDIBLE!! i am telling you, you will not be disappointed.
Oh! I say Hunger Games just because they look really fun. Sarah's Key sounds so interesting!
Oh how fun! I've always wanted to join a book club! I've read Hunger Games...super good!
I read Sarah's Key - very sad, but good read and Unbroken, which was AMAZING. The most unbelievable true story I've read. I couldn't put it down. We read Sarah's Key for our book club too! Ha.
What a fun idea! I'd love to become a member of a book club, since I really don't read as much as I should either.
Sarah's Key was just made into a movie, and I've been wanting to see it. I'll have to pick up the book soon too then, I guess.
And, of course, I'm going to have to tell you to read the Hunger Games. You'll love it!!

We read the Rules of Civility in a book club that I was in and it proved to be a great choice. Not only was it a good read, it sparked lots of discussion.
Of all of those, I've only read the hunger games but it was so good I finished it in a matter of days. I need to join a book club! I'm falling behind on my goal of reading 30 books this year.
Hunger Games! It will be a quick read too, because you wont want to put it down!!! Also, The Paris Wife is another good one that I recently finished.
our book club sort of turned into wine club, but it was still fun. the hunger games are amazing. the others i haven't read, but you'll have to keep us posted if they're good if you end up reading them.
i love it - i just joined a book club today too. eek.... im joining for the social aspect and wine.. LOL

What fun–I keep meaning to join/start a book club, but I just haven't found the time yet! Rules of Civility is next on my list!
How fun! - I've always wanted to join a book club, there's something so romantic about the whole thing :)
The only book I've heard of out of your options is the Hunger Games, but I haven't read it yet either so it would probably also be my first choice.

I had to comment because Unbroken is one of, if not THE, best book I have ever read. It is an unbelievable and inspiring true story and I couldn't stop thinking about it for days. Hunger Games is great too of course and I've totally read the whole series, but Unbroken is on another level!
Sounds so wonderful & I would definitely recommend the Hunger Games!
Love, Leigh
Yes to the Hunger Games! I'm on the third book and totally hooked!
I'm completely embarrassed that I don't know any of these books so can't help choose - but I love the idea of joining a book group. In fact, I long to join a book group! Hope you girls have a blast!

Hunger games, hands down! Book clubs are so much fun, I feel they always make me try books I wouldn't usually pick up, but end up loving all the same.
The Hunger Games is great. You must read it. Just be ready to read the whole series. You can't stop. I loved Rules of Civility also. Great era. Unbroken was also good. Y'all have some great choices for your club. You're going to love it.
I have The Hunger Games too - but haven't read it yet. All my friends have said it is great! So fun you joined a book club!
Book Club is the best! One of my book clubs read the Hunger Games and it was a great discussion generator.
been looking for a new book to read -- will def have to check out your picks! but you MUST read the Hunger Games -- sooooooo good!! xo
I have not read any of those books but will definitely look for the hunger games from all the recommendations I see here. I am currently reading "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". I know that the movie is already out but I havent watched it so its a win I guess.
Ooh I want to read this! Thanks for sharing my dear.
Hunger Games!!
You've got to read the Hunger Games; it's such a great book and has many points of discussion- perfect for book club!
How fun! I want to join a book club to keep up with current great reads! I bought the Hunger Games and am excited to start it! and watch the movie!
Did you ever get to see the Vow??
Hunger Games is so good! Definitely read it, if you get the chance.
Yay so fun!! My book club has read (and I recommend) I Don't Know How She Does It, Trail of Crumbs, The Happiness Project, and next up for us is Fifth Avenue, 5 AM. I'm also reading The Hunger Games on the side though and can't get enough :)
How was Sarah's Key? I've seen the film which was stunning, if emotionally draining, and I'd really like to try the book.

Yay! I love book club- already excited for the next one :) I voted Hunger Games, too, but I'm excited to read The Last Child- guess I'll just have to read both :)
If you loved Sarah's Key, you might like "A Train in Winter"...it's about the French women who were rounded up for participating in the Resistance and sent to the labor camps. It's non-fiction, but still reads like a novel. I highly recommend it!
