wedding wednesday - the perfect playlist.

via, via, via

happy wedding wednesday! one of the most challenging parts of our wedding planning so far has been coming up with our playlist! (a project i thought would be easy since h and i have similar tastes in music). we can't seem to agree on what songs will make the cut. with a limited amount of time for cocktails, dinner and dancing-- i want to make sure we have all of our favorites included but i still want to leave room for our dj to do his thing. we also haven't decided on THE song. (our first dance song). thankfully we have a few months to edit the list-- until then i would love to hear your suggestions!

what songs do you love hearing at weddings?!
what songs would you put on a 'do not play' list?

xo,
jillian

  1. I decided on our first dance song when I was 15, made it easy :) (not normal)

  2. Haha that's a good question! Anything that's gonna get people up & dancing and don't play anything that is about cheating or affairs!! Haha!!

  3. That butterfly kisses song. I hate it. Can't stand it. Although, I'm not super emotional so that might be why.

  4. Our first dance song was by Otis Redding and I love it ;) On the do not play list was the Macarena! haha

  5. The Electric Slide, YMCA, Macarena, Celebrate, etc are definitely on my do not play list. My must haves are lots of Motown songs and Today's hits. :)

  6. I love the classic Frank Sinatra and the magnificent Michael Bublé!

  7. this is still a big to-do for us! so far we have a growing list of must plays and do not plays. and the do not plays are essentially any group dances. haha.

  8. Anything Van Morrison! Also oldies always get the crowd on the dance floor!

  9. We played rat pack music during cocktail hour and dinner and then oldies for dancing. EVERYONE, from young to old, got up to dance so I know it was a hit! :)

  10. I know putting together a play list for us would be challenging, too (if we ever end up planning a wedding...) but I think the Macarena, the chicken dance, and that stupid electric slide will definitely be on the do NOT play!!

  11. I have no idea how people pick first dance songs (not married, phew!), but good luck!

As for music, I love Motown and oldies in general—anything that can get people of all ages up and moving without being obscene! Haha.

  13. We chose "Fly Me to the Moon" by Frank Sinatra for our First Dance & I adore it to this day. I'm not sure if this is a Jersey thing or not but "Livin on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi always packs the dance floor! I agree with the posters above- no Macarena, Electric Slide & Chicken Dance.

  14. We had "Start Me Up" by the Stones, Shout, Put a Ring On It...those were some that really got people dancing. And then I have a big Italian family, so that was fun once we got the traditional Italian beats going!

  15. I love all of those silly group-dance songs. Electric Slide! Macarena! Locomotion! Everyone rolls their eyes, but they still head out to the dance floor to take part.

  16. Single Ladies. I HATE that song. It makes me sick whenever I hear it at a wedding. Whoever came up with the idea of playing it during the bouquet toss is forever on my sh*t list!

  17. I think that would be the toughest decision to make planning a wedding! There are so many great "first dance" songs out there! A few of my friends actually choriographed dance routines to their first dance :) Don't know if I'll go that far, but would def want it to be a song to remember!

  18. Ok, first I want that cake topper, even if I'm not getting married for awhile!

As for music, pick what you LOVE, it doesn't have to be conventional, this is coming from a music journalist. Do what feels right.

I hope one day that my first dance will be to "I've Had The Time Of My Life", with all the choreo from the movie, of course!

  19. I know everyone hates those group dance songs but depending on the crowd I feel like sometimes guests really don't mind them as much as they pretend too? My family has a booty thumping song that we've used at most family weddings in the last few years - as soon as the first dance is over the family storms the floor and starts dancing like video girls. We're a classy bunch I tell ya ;)

P.S. If Christianna does the Dirty Dancing dance I want to be at that wedding! I kick myself for not having done that since Patrick Swayze is my favorite human ofalltime!!!

  20. it seems a little cliche, but at every wedding i've been to over the past couple years, nothing has got more people to go crazy on the dance floor than BEP "i've got a feelin'!" another favorite dance song is daft punk "one more time."

  21. Picking out music is so much fun. A great way to let your personality shine through! Our first dance song was You and I by Michael Buble. We got married at the height of Single Ladies by Beyonce, so that was everyone's choice for the bouquet toss {still is}, but I chose California Girls by Katy Perry. It was perfect :)

Good luck agreeing, and thanks for linking up!

  22. Well music is different for everyone but I did not want any disco at my wedding. No YMCA or We Are Family. I recently went to a wedding where they played tons of oldies from Dirty Dancing and we danced the entire night! So fun!! xoxo elizabeth

  25. Meatloaf "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" is my favorite dancing-at-a-wedding song! Its older and a bit racy but soooo much fun!

  26. "Hold You In My Arms" - Ray Lamontange. Such a lovely love song :)
    Oh - Fancy That.

  27. You have to play "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey. This song always takes us back to our last dance of the night. Our guests made a huge circle around us and we all sang this song at the top of our lungs. It is one of the best memories of our night. Such a fun song, you really can't go wrong with it.

    Good luck!

Can I suggest on your RSVP cards allow your guests to recommend a song? We did this as well and it worked our SO great! Everyone was happy and EVERYONE was dancing waiting for their song to be played.

  28. Hmmm... you would think this would be the easiest part. I hate hearing the chicken dance and all of those stupid cliche songs. Do what speaks to you and the hubs and it will be more special. xo

  29. We went with a band that played classic rock - lots of Beatles, Paul Simon, etc., and we had our first dance to Peter Gabriel - In Your Eyes. For the dinner playlist, we did lots of love indie rock songs - Bloc Party, Cat Power as well as Radiohead, Regina Spektor, and lots of Coldplay.
