the modern chalkboard.

I have some exciting condo decorating news! H has finally given me the green light to paint a chalkboard wall in our hall/kitchen! Now I just need to decide what I want to do...here are a few inspiration photos (thank you pinterest!)

We have really high ceilings so I think a floor to ceiling chalkboard might be a bit much. I'm considering buying a frame and just painting the glass but I am not sure how the texture would turn out.

Does anyone have experience with chalkboard paint? Is it easy to use?
how would you create a modern chalkboard?

xo,
Jillian

  1. Ohh this is exciting! I agree, if you have tall ceilings maybe go with something inside a frame

  2. I love chalkboard walls! A long time ago, my mom spray painted the top half of our door in our kitchen and it sort of is like a frame. It's perfect and so much fun! We use it for everything!

  5. How exciting!!! I love chalkboard everything! I used the spray paint version on a little dinette table (so fun to draw place settings or write the menu!) and it was really easy... just a couple of coats and a 24hr drying period and it was ready to go! Have fun! XO brynn

  7. I love the look of the Modern chalk board, there are so many varieties! I know a couple of families that have an entire wall of chalk board! It's popular to have as a feature in a playroom/basement. But could also be great in the kitchen/breakfast room/mud room...making sure you NEVER forget your to-do list :)

  8. I used a frame to make mine and did a post on it.. instead of painting the glass, I painted the backing and then just hung it without the glass! if that makes sense... theres pictures on my blog of the whole process.. we've had fun writing little messages on it every day. Next apartment maybe we will go for the whole wall :)

  9. So fun! I have a thrift store mirror that I bought and painted turquoise, then about a week after we moved into our house I knocked it over and the mirror broke. I want to turn it into a chalkboard, I have the paint, but I don't know how or what to put in the frame as it is an odd shape. ANyway...I think buying a big frame (or even making one if you have access to a sander) would be awesome. Have fun with it!

  12. Oooh I loove chalkboard walls - we don't own a home yet, but when we do I will definitely be finding a space to create one. I think a frame with chalkboard paint in it would look great!

  18. I love the window frame look. What if, instead of painting the glass of the frame, you remove the glass and paint a square on the wall the size of the frame? I know that limits your placement to just that particular area but it might make for a better texture than the glass.

I met someone in NYC once who had his entire front entryway painted with chalkboard paint. He had all different colors of chalk and asked everyone who came over to write their name and/or a message or picture. It was pretty cool. You just reminded me of that with the "floor to ceiling" comment. :)

  31. What a great idea! I wish I could paint my walls in my apartment. I've been loving this idea. I'm not sure how the texture would turn out either, but I agree that painting a single wall might be too much with your high ceilings. can't wait to see what you do!

  35. i painted glass and it DID NOT work out well. the chalkboard paint ended up sliding. if you get a frame either paint the wall directly and put the frame on top or paint a piece of wood and attach to the frame.
