the first part of our trip to spain was in barcelona. we landed in the city on saturday morning and we spent the day running around seeing as much of the city as possible. i was immediately smitten by the famous gaudi homes (especially the casa batllo) and all the other intricate architecture at every corner.
the city was bustling with visitors for the La Mercè festival (an annual party to celebrate the Roman Catholic feast day of Our Lady of Mercy). during the festival we saw a parade filled with paper mache 'giants' (gigantes y cabezudos), neighborhood bands, the sardana (a large circle dance), and a castell competition (human towers!) it was a fantastic way to see local traditions and celebrate the weekend.
