wedding wednesday- stay cool.

hello friends! today is my first official wedding wednesday post...whoohoo. now that the wedding is less than a year away i need to stay on track and start planning.

as you know, i announced last week that our wedding date is july 14, 2012. so july in illinois = hot damn hot (i am glad it will be sunny but i am a little nervous about our outdoor ceremony). i have decided to help cool the guests off we should consider making (or buying) some pretty fans. here are a few i have my eye on::
i also like the idea of having a little bowl of sunscreen for guests. the last thing i want is for everyone to have bright red faces in all the photos.

anyone else have a summer wedding? how did you deal with the heat?
any tips or things to keep on hand?!

xo,
jillian

fans are a cute idea! my friend (who's getting married this saturday and it's supposed to be 99 degrees!) turned her programs into fans just by gluing them onto popsicle sticks last minute! :)

Very cute idea! :)

Save a few bucks and make the fans yourself. Another idea to help with the heat is to purchase parasol umbrellas for the guests. Of course every guest can't have one, that would be too expensive. But a few can be open and closed, placed near the seating. Would look lovely in your pics too.

fans are a must!! also, make sure you have plenty of drinks available during the ceremony for guests. you don't need anyone getting dehydrated before the party starts :)

The sunscreen is such a great idea!! The guests would totally dig it!

Love the sunscreen idea! Definitely a good idea for a summer wedding! Definitely serve lots of drinks or have bottled water available to keep guests hydrated! You can print special labels for the water! XOXO

these are adorable! :) and what a considerate and cute idea for your guests - esp if next summer the days are as hot as they have been recently!

But congratulations - what an exciting time for you and your fiance! xx

Ooo Congrats! :) These fans are adorable! You can totally cool your guests down in style. :) First comment, but I've been following your blog for a while, super cute!

that pink fan is the cutest thing ever! you must do something like that for your wedding hehe!!

I love the idea of fans. Our vineyard actually had parasols for all our guests to use since the ceremony was in direct sunlight. I had sweat dripping down my legs during the ceremony so it was pretty hot where we were! I love love love those mr. and mrs. fans! Such a good idea. And YES to the bowl of sunscreen!

Corey @ Learning Patience said...

Fans are fun and functional! Definitely suggest a specialty drink or two for the guests -- you can do cute monogrammed paper cups or have fun umbrellas in them or put them in mismatched mason jars, etc...

The sunscreen is such a good idea. I love outdoor ceremonies. xo

I got married in December, so I have no first-hand advice... but I love the ideas you have. I have seen people do fans that double as programs, and I really like that idea. Sunscreen is a thoughtful and practical touch. If it's really hot, some popsicles that coordinate with wedding colors could be a fun touch. Just simple juice ones, maybe as guests leave the ceremony. (I can't stop thinking about popsicles with our recent weather!)

Yay, wedding play...I love it! I've seen parasols given out at weddings, and it's a beautiful (if view-inhibiting) look. Another thing you can do is somehow encourage hats via dress code...which can be really fun as well.

Love the idea of sunscreen - get the spray-on kind, though ;)

OH jeez I know how this goes. We got married in an outdoor ceremony in the afternoon in humid hot 95 degree NC weather! Was it miserable? - kinda yah. Would I change it? Nope!

We had fans and cool water for right after the (short!) ceremony! The guys for 3 piece light wool suits and the BMs claimed their party heels started melting to the slate ground! I was in bliss and oblivious to the heat the whole day! :)

So pretty and perfect for a summer wedding! I have two coming up. Maybe I'll bring a fan. Ha.

We were married in June, but everything was inside...except some of the pictures. We just suffered through it, and shot fast!

Love your ideas!

Love this idea! I went to a wedding last year that was outside in the summer, and the sun wasn't so bad, but it would have been nice to have fans (and maybe water bottles?). I'm so excited for your wedding Wednesday posts!

The bowl of sunscreen for guests idea is brilliant and you should totally include some adorable fans in your special day! Muah, sweetie

PS: Im hosing a beautiful jewelry GIVEAWAY today:) Hope you'll join in:)

I love the idea of fans and a few parasols throughout is so cute too! Mitchell and I went to a wedding last year in the sun and as you walked to the seating area you passed a table with cups for lemonaid or cold ice water, it was so nice to be able to take a cool drink to our seats!

natasha {schue love} said...

I LOVE the idea of program fans...we did the same thing, so our guests could cool off during the ceremony. We also had lemonade and ice water as they walked out to the ceremony so they could stay hydrated. LOVE your new layout, btw!

Those fans are so cute!!! Definitely a must for summertime weddings in the heat. Can't let your guests melt. I have yet to see a bowl of sunscreen at a wedding or any outdoor event, but that is a genius idea!

\very cute! There i\
s nothing like sitting at a really hot wedding. Friends of ours have brought in market umbrellas to provide shade. Shade is the best!

I love the idea of printing the program on the fan! Maybe have some pretty bottles of water?? Don't want people getting dehydrated!

Drew {Coral Cafe} said...

Those fans are definitely an adorable touch to a wedding! My cousin just had his wedding in Charleston over June and they used fans for the guests bc of how hot it gets. They were a perfect touch and even more special bc they were handmade ;) I know you can create some beautiful fans!!

I just have to say that I am so glad that I'm getting married near the time that you are. These tips and ideas of yours are insanely amazing! I mean, I NEVER would have thought of a little bowl of sunscreens! So smart! We're probably going to do July or September (the Republican National Convention is here in August), so those fans are great too!!

Thanks so so much for sharing all of your ideas! I'm starting my venue search tomorrow with the Tampa History Center and Tampa Art Museum.

So cute. Fans are definitely a great idea. I especially like the first one in pink that looks like a ballon with the different font types.

You could also make a cute sticker with your name's on them and put them over some water bottles to hand out before the ceremony!

Loving this! So excited for you, for your wedding! (If that made any sense)

My best friend is having her wedding a week after you and I am nervous of the type of bridesmaid dress she will pick...it is sooo hot I do not want to wear fabric that will make me melt. I really like the flower fans. Try to make your ceremony short will be my only advice. :-)

I love the feel of this- I had a kind of rustic glam wedding and loved it...mine was the hotest day of July and it was in barn so yah...HOT! To keep cool, we had lots of great cold drinkie poos- mojitos were a major hit! I think fans and sunscreen are also a great idea- or parasols for the ceremony.

paper fans & sunscreen are a must! I attended an outdoor wedding once where they had small glasses of ice water before the bride walked down the aisle. We were all grateful.

I worked a few weddings as an assistant wedding planner and we made the programs into the fans. The programs were double sided to we put the popsicle stick in between the two sides If you do it yourself be sure to get adhesive spray, gloves, and clothes pins to hold them. And do it outside!

I've seen people do cold personalized water bottles for the guests too.

Those fans are so adorable! I got married in the summer, but I got married in Kansas... outdoor weddings are almost impossible with the knock-you-over wind, but fans are a great idea.

Meg had fans at her Jamaican wedding! Love the polka dot ones!

Love fans! I am planning on doing fans, too!!! I came across some cute ones randomly but originally thought we were having a fall event. Once it became a summer wedding (and it will be hot damn hot where we will be, too!) I couldn't stop thinking about those fans!!! I love your sunscreen idea, too! So great! xoxoxo brynn

p.s. Meant to also say how much I love all of those fans together...how cute would it be to have a variety of shapes, sizes and colors???!!!

this makes me excited as i ADORE weddings.

it's always hot here in the south. how do we handle at weddings? have tubs of inexpensive flip flops in all sizes guests can trade those heels in for so their feet don't swell....well, and they can be more comfortable.

AND have a mini regular bar or bar that serves lemonade in mason jars before the ceremony that guest can sip on and stay cool.

love your pics!

I'm so excited for you! You are going to have so much fun planning this next year and I can't wait to follow along :). My wedding was outdoor so I had fans and I ordered little tags to tie to them that had our initials on them. I also had gift bags at the hotel (we had a destination wedding) for each guest. The gift bag was a beach hat and I turned it upside down and filled it w/ beach goodies (sunscreen, water, salt water taffy, maps of the area, etc). Happy planning :)

Love all of these fan ideas! I had a destination wedding in Grand Cayman and we used raffia fans. They were inexpensive and super helpful for staying cool!

My friend just had her program on a Popsicle stick and they doubled as fans, very practical! Her ceremony was short and it was hot, I'd vote for the ceremony in the shade :)

debbiecutieface said...

the fans and the bowl of sunscreen are such cute ideas for an outdoor summer wedding! Whatever you come up with, I'm sure it'll be beautiful.

Katie said...

The bowl of sunscreen is a sweet idea! Perhaps large glass jars with pumps would be good, too? That could have a really pretty look. Definitely make sure you have some shady seats and maybe bottled water or a water cooler, especially if you have elderly guests.

The programs that double as fans are a lifesaver, too, and all you need is a bit of heavy card stock.

You are so thoughtful!! I love the fan/sunscreen idea. We were married outside on June 5th &--although the heat hadn't really set in--the sun was beating down on us. Especially me actually, as I faced literally directly west.
Now, it you can just get a real fan for yourself ;).
Love, Leigh

I saw an outdoor wedding where there were mason jars with ice and lemonade and stripey straws for guests to grab and sip before the ceremony while they waited in the sun.

I was surprised at how early people arrive for weddings sometimes, so you may also want to provide some shade for them if it's a daytime event. I love the fan idea too!

we had an outdoor summer picnic wedding. to help our guests stay cool, we served cold drinks & fruit right as they arrived, which they could continue to enjoy through our ceremony. we also handmade super cute paper fans which worked beautifully, and we placed our grandmother's in the shade under the tree where we had our actual ceremony. they were protected by the sun and were close enough to hear. our ceremony was pretty short, so our loved ones weren't forced to sit in the sun for too long. we prepared everyone in advanced by encouraging them to wear sunscreen and hats on our wedding website.
