dreaming of a bike

Before I run out and buy a bike I thought I'd ask you opinion. Where is a good place to find an affordable yet stylish bike (and helmet?!) I don't want to bike hundreds of miles or spend a ton of cash on a smancy bike...I just want it to look cute. and to have a basket.

right now i have my eye on this lovely::

do you have a bike? any suggestions?

  1. this looks dreamy. I agree I just want a bike with a basket to put cute things in. and a helmet would just ruin that image for me.

  2. I've been dreaming about a bike with a basket too! I have this vision of riding around with my pup, but that might be more fantasy than reality : ) I hope you find something great!

  3. I have a mad crush on that bike too. Trek bikes last forever - definitely worth the investment.

  4. i had a really pretty light blue cruiser bike that i got at walmart of all places. the problem is that i bought it because it was pretty. it didn't have gears and was very difficult to ride. i sold it.

also, for the comment you left on my blog, here is another quinoa recipe that is really good on its own: http://lachapstickfanatique.blogspot.com/2011/05/recipe-garbanzo-bean-salad-over-quinoa.html

  5. That bike is adorable, I love the white and camel, looks like it is out of an old movie! I know Target sells Schwinn's that are similiar in fun colors for about $140! I have my eye on one of them...happy hunting!

  6. I have a bike that I bought for £30 off a friend (I don't think she realised how much it was worth!). Aluminium frame, duel suspension and 16 gears :) No basket though... I need to invest in a pannier one of these days!

  10. I don't have a bike, so I have no suggestions, but I LOVE the basket brimming with flowers! That's almost enough to make we want to go out and buy a bike!

    Great blog, newest follower! :)

  11. That one is really cute!! My friend just told me she got hers at Walmart for $100. May be worth looking into...

  12. Haha - I want a bike too, but also not to bike far - maybe to my farmers market to get some beautiful flowers, and look cute doing it!

  14. I love bikes with baskets! - I don't have a bike, just because it wouldn't be really practical where we live in SA, but would looove to buy one if I was still in California!

Good luck, and can't wait to see which one you end up choosing!

  15. I have two of the images saved in my files. So lovely! I know Trek bikes are among the best, I myself have one, but it's not that cute and it doesn't have a basket either. :)Ada

  18. When I was living in Chicago, I bought a very cool bright red vintage Schwinn for around $50 (or something crazy cheap) from a bike shop in Uptown. I think it was on Broadway. The guy that owns the shop collects old bikes and refurbishes them. He had so many cool bikes it was hard to choose but I really had my heart set on a red one with a basket and, lo and behold, he had one! I don't remember the name but hopefully knowing the neighborhood will help you find it. And it was either on Broadway or Clark b/c I biked home from the shop and just went straight down that street (I lived right near where they intersect at Diversey).

  20. I just bought my husband a bike, but it's an intense road bike... definitely not the cute bike you're looking for! Keep in mind that aluminum frames are more expensive, but are much lighter which helps a ton when biking up hill. Happy searching!

  24. I'm of absolutely no help but maybe Craigslist and the like for a vintage number...I love that top right one with the flowers in the basekt- sooo charming!!!

  25. Hmmm, I've been wondering this myself. I have an old mountain bike that is not so good for riding the Lake Shore path. Let me know if you find one!

  26. I want the same thing! I'm honestly contemplating just picking up a cruiser from Target or something. THen again, there is a bike shop on the square called Boulevard BIkes that has tons of cute cruisers, but I don't know how much they are. I think you could probably find a used one somewhere too.

  27. I've been looking for a bike like that blue one for about 2 years now. And can't justify spending hundred of dollars on any of the ones that I find. Let me know what you come up with girlfriend. I too, just want to look cute :) hehe xo

  28. so cute! urban has a built-to-order bike shop online, but i'm not sure how they're priced comparatively. so excited about the get together this evening! see you soon!!

  30. I commute to work on a bike and I'm the dorkiest bike rider ever because I insist on wearing a bright pink helmet. No matter how cute my bike is, or my outfit, the helmet just negates it all....

    ReplyDelete
  31. Not yet but I'd love to own one as beautiful as these..

    ReplyDelete
  32. No suggestions, but I totally agree . . . I need one of these bikes!

  33. i have an old school - old man bike that belonged to manu's dad! haha. but i love the one you chose! you'll look so cute scooting around on it!

  34. I don't know much about bikes, but I do know that I like the one above. And with a basket? PERFECTION :)

I also have never worn a helmet on a bike. But, mind you, I've never been riding anywhere dangerous. And I've crashed before. But I was going at such a low rate of speed that there were no injuries. Thank heavens.

  36. You've definitely gotta get one with a basket!! My roommate down in Florida had a gold bike for me to borrow and I wanted to paint the basket coral and take my little pomeranian for a ride on the beach..Needless to say I never made it happen. Hoping I can live vicariously through your new bike with a cute basket! ;)

  39. Love your choice of Bike with the chic basket! We had a similar one in Germany with a wicker basket on the front ( to carry all the goodies from the bakery) and was soooo comfortable to ride.
Hope that you find your dream bike.
    Cheers:)

  40. Target has awesome cruisers in lovely colors. I've been eyeing the light blue and dusty pink one with a basket for a while now! xo

  41. I adore my bike. It's a Schwinn but looks vintage with stitched handle bars and fenders. I ride it almost everyday along the levee and love it.

  42. i bought a hunter green beach cruiser from a small, local bike shop in my town (santa cruz,ca). i later added a little basket to the front of it. beach cruisers are awesome because they're perfect for getting around, and then thicker tires make it possible to do a little dirt road riding.

  43. I just found out I'm babysitting tonight for my close friends whose sitter bailed earlier this afternoon. I'm so bummed I won't be seeing you tonight! Have loads of fun and a drink for me, ok?

  44. When I lived in San Diego at least, people would buy and sell bikes on craigslist like trading cards, everyone was always moving or upgrading so there were some great finds!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Ohh yes, biking is my favorite! I love the one you picked out! Keep us posted on your search!

  52. Such a cute bike! When we got married, my husband got a new bike and I'm stuck with the old one that I've had since high school. If I ever am able to upgrade, I'll be right up the same alley with what you're looking at!

  54. I just bought a Schwinn (hybrid) bike over Memorial Day weekend and I am in love. I purchased it used and it's in great condition so maybe try your luck at that. My next bike purchase will definitely be a beach cruiser. They are adorable!

  55. I got my cruiser bike from Craig's List. It needed a little bit of work, but nothing excessive. It's great for riding around the city and on the lake shore path.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I bought my bike at target schwinn. However if you want a cruiser bike there are many bike stores in the suburbs. There is one in downtown LaGrange. They have many bikes but I am not sure of he prices.

  57. You can get covers for your helmet so that it looks like a hat. And if I could remember who makes them I'd tell you :-/

However, that bike looks so cute. I imagine you could find one in good condition with some determined Craigslist searching since people buy them with good intentions and then run out of space.

  59. Love that bike! When I rode my beach cruiser (had to leave it at college because it wouldn't fit in the U-Haul. I'm currently on the hunt for a new one too :)) I didn't wear a helmet, which is really bad! Now whenever I ride my road bike I wear a metallic multicolored helmet with a built-in visor that I've had since junior high. So if you find a cute helmet, do share!

  61. Hm, I don't have a bike but I know our town has a couple of cyclerys. If your town has a university, maybe check around those neighborhoods? I know that that's where a few of ours are located just because, well, college kids ride bikes more than most people, ha!

  62. Oh my I love this! Those pictures make me want a pretty bike with basket too. I might have to invest in one :) I hope you find the one you want. x

  66. Back when I lived in Texas (I'm in NYC now) I got an amazing vintage Schwinn for about $80 on craigslist. After I got it I just took it to a bike shop to have them test out the breaks and tires to make sure it was safe so I think all together I spent maybe $120 but I've had it for years and its amazing.
