i have been a fan of chinese food for years but i have been reluctant to try bubble tea. i don't like tea and i am slightly lactose intolerant so it seemed like a no-go.
h convinced me i could order one that would taste like a smoothie. so i did and at first i really liked my pineapple, strawberry, banana drink...then i slurped up what felt like a slimy blueberry. i knew the tea had tapioca balls in it but i wasn't expecting the little sucker to pass through my giant straw so fast (okay, again duh). i literally yelped and jumped from surprise. this made everyone else laugh for far too long... :) in the end i am glad i conquered my foodie fears and i'll order another bubble tea smoothie (w/out the tapioca balls!)
what do you think of bubble tea? and those little tapioca balls?
what new food (or drink) have you tried recently?

jillian

I've actually never tried bubble tea and we have at least 4 restaurants on campus that sell them. It also doesn't help that my roommate traumatized me a bit because she slurped a tapioca ball and apparently burst out laughing at the same time and the ball came out of her nose! O_O hahaha.
hahahaha!!! This sounds like the EXACT reaction I had at my first try of Bubble Tea! I liked it at first but those gummy things were a little much after a while...just give me the smoothie!!
loooooove bubble tea! I have even made it at home before! yums.
I've been wary of bubble tea because of those little tapioca balls. Glad to see they're not as scary as they seem, might have to try bubble tea one of these days...
I dont like balls in my drink! Haha so if I tried this I'd order it without like you prob will be next time =) hahaha! quite an unwelcome surprise.. I still get upset when a piece of spinach doesn't blend in mine and I look like a rabbit as a result ;)
Happy monday dear!

I have been reluctant to try bubble tea but I may have to now!
all of my friends LOVE bubble tea but i never got used to the tapioca balls, lol. i usually get mine without the little balls in there. i'm a bad asian. :)
cute & little
who have never had it nor have heard of it...never i want to try it though.
what i wouldn't give for a little food excitment around here!
we just got a bubble tea place in our tiny little town but I have been to chicken to try it since I am not a big fan of tapioca. your smoothie-type bubble tea sounds pretty good. maybe I'll try it.
Husband loves the bubble tea...if it's the same as boba, which I'm assuming it is since they both have the nasty tapioca balls {not a fan either...}.
I think it's so sweet that you get to do dinner every week with your fiance's family! How fun!
Hope you had an amazing weekend my dear.
xoxoxo,
Joelle
Never even heard of bubble tea, but I will have to try it!
You know I have to say, I've tried so hard to love bubble tea but it's just not my thing. The tea itself is fine, but the tapioca balls just sort of ruin it for me! It's like, I'm sitting there enjoying this lovely tea...then, WOAH, wait, WHAT'S THAT IN MY TEA?!?! why is it SQUISHY?!
Hahhaa.

So What If I Like Pretty Things
Love, love, LOVE bubble tea! It was one of the first things that the ex insisted that I try and it's now a favorite! I reacted the same way to the tapioca the first time, but now I love it and usually order mine with extra. Chew them, don't swallow them whole.. I think that's the trick.
I've actually never tried it, but I've always wanted to!
I work in urban downtown KC, and just passed a hoppin' little bubble tea cafe the other day. You have convinced me to pop in ASAP to try one out!
Hope your day is lovely, my dear! xoxo
I can't decide if I like it or not- go back and forth from loving those little balls to thinking they're slimy and weird coming through those giant straws..so undecided but loved your photo pairing- so funny!
Bubble tea is one of my favorite drinks! I have mixed feelings on the tappioca pearls though--I only like them when they are soft and chewy. Sometimes they are hard and disgusting--that totally grosses me out!
I love bubble tea THIS MUCH! I usually get a strawberry milk tea & I love the tapioca bubbles, too!
I have never tried bubble tea, it sounds interesting. I would love to try it and will have to look for it when I go out next time.
i too have feared the balls! and have never gotten the tea! haha.
but i think i will try it if you say it's good.
i tried some squid the other day at manu's mom's house. nope. didn't like it.
:)
love these...they are not always for everyone so im glad you are on board as well!

I love bubble tea! I didn't try it until a few years ago but my old roommate took me to a bubble tea house on Western and Addison and I was immediately hooked. Argo tea has some pretty good (but sweet) bubble tea that I would occasionally get at work. Glad you tried it! I tried escargot this weekend, to my surprise. I've got food phobias, plus I've been a vegetarian for the last 6 years so eating fish/being a pescatarian is a new thing for me. I liked it, at least the way Maude's prepared it.
I've never heard of bubble tea. I live a fairly sheltered life when it comes to food, and I like it that way! Lol
haha oh no! i will definitely be careful of that happening when i do finally try it. love trying new foods, but for some reason bubble tea just doesn't look appetizing to me.

love love love bubble tea! if you're not crazy about the pearls, try it with coconut jelly. I like it better, and it's healthier too!

I love bubble tea! Almond vanilla is by far my favorite!! :)
I HATED the tapioca balls at first, but for some reason was drawn to try them again... and again, and again until I started LOVING them. I don't know why I wanted to keep on giving them a try while I hated them, but now I think they are sooo good. Its like a drink and a snack, haha! So fun :)
Haha! I have been drinking bubble tea for years but stopped ordering it a year or two ago because I realized it made me feel too full. I kind of like the tapioca balls though...not sure why...

Love the tea flavors, do not like the balls haha. And I LOVE Persian food too!! So yummy! We just had a new restaurant open a block away from me in Portland and I'm so excited about it!
I love bubble tea, but not the "pearls" or whatever they claim to be. I definitely order mine without. I've never liked tapioca. Slimy fish eggs! xoxo
A bubble tea shop just opened in my city, but I haven't been brave enough to try it. I prefer my tea sweet and iced, thank you! lol
Stopping by from Mingle Monday.
I've never heard of those! They sound yummy!
omg!! I have been craving this literally for 2 weeks now. I love love love boba & have been on the hunt to find a good spot near my apt for some...

I was sort of weary of bubble tea also, especially the tapioca balls, but sometimes even those can be really delicious! But bad bubble tea is pretty bad, so watch out!
I think I could live on it. And I love the large tapioca. I always ask them to make mine with soymilk. They usually make it with non-dairy creamer, so even if you're lactose intolerant, it's ok to drink em. Good for you for being adventurous.
How's your Monday?
You Are My Favorite
Never tried it! You're a brave girl! But the photos actually make it look pretty good!
i looooooove bubble tea! my fave ones are the ones in taiwan (that's where it originated)! california has good ones too but my fave in chicago is joyyees!! miss that place!!
LOL! I WANT to like bubble tea, but I can't get over the tapioca balls. They're too strange. Even if the tea is good they ruin it.
I have not had this tea, but after this post....IT IS NOW MY MISSION. YUM
LOVE bubble tea! I've been heading to Chinatown for tapioca tastiness since high school!
I want to like it so badly! I've had it a few times, and the tea just never has enough flavor for me, and those balls are a bit strange. They don't taste like anything, and that bothers me. Do you think you'll ever try the tapioca balls again? Also, I swear the ones I've had are white tapioca balls. Is that possible? Maybe the black ones are better?
I absolutely LOVE bubble tea! So delicious! I love the little tapioca balls - hilarious that they scared you ;)
never even heard this so obviously i haven't tried it but...there's seems to be a lot of lovers from these comments! maybe i'll have to try it!
Bubble tea was all the rage when we visited Thailand over the summer!
Kiwi and I will pretty much try anything once so we will definitely have to give it a whirl!
Thai bowl by UIC has the best smoothies ever with the tapioca balls!!
yikes! bubble tea is not my thang :)
Never tried it..good for you!
Haven't had it! Looks pretty. Sounds weird ;)
Bubble tea scares me!! It's the texture...I'm not brave enough!
Wow i have never heard of Bubble tea, but it sounds delicious. Must find somewhere near that has it. :)
Murphy xo
I've never tried bubble tea before but I want to! Good to know that it's good, I'll keep an eye on the balls haha
I've never tried bubble tea before..but iwould like to!!!! does anyone knows where I could find it in Milan or in Italy??? :)
http://cihc.blogspot.com/
i, like you, have always been scared to try them. i don't like tapioca {which i never knew was inside those balls} but it still scares me...and the straw is so large!
but i am glad you are working on your foodie fears. i am safe eater....
I've never even heard of bubble tea - sounds very interesting! Is it an American treat? I don't think you could even get it here in Finland. Hmm, something to try out when I visit the States :)
xox mervi
you just created an instant craving in me for bubble tea!! love it so much. haha. love your blog by the way xx
I have actually never heard of bubble tea. I actually love regular tea, but this sounds incredibly delicious. I will have to find a place where I can try it or a recipe.
