oscar memories.

the first time i actually paid attention to the oscars and watched the entire awards show was when that titanic was nominated. to say i liked the movie was a bit of an understatement, i was in love with jack dawson and i had visions of our wedding invitations (jack and jill!). i also was in seventh grade and leonardo dicaprio was a big deal. so naturally i covered my walls with titanic posters and tiger beat photos of my romeo. i know, i know creeper. but everyone has had their first celebrity crush, right? my family even encouraged the behavior, for christmas, my mom surprised me with a bright plastic sapphire and rhinestone 'heart of the ocean' necklace. when i discovered it in my stocking i squealed with delight and as embarrassing as it is, i still don't have the heart to get rid of it.

during the 1998 oscars i kept a dry erase tally (nerd alert!) of how many awards titanic reeled in that night (the final count was 11). i continue to be a big kate winslet and leonardo dicaprio fan, sense and sensibility has trumped titanic as my favorite film and leo still has it-- hello, the departed & inception!

titanic was my tipping point, and after that award show i was hooked on everything oscars- especially the fashion. who could forget Gweneth Paltrow's 1999 ill-fitting pink Ralph Lauren gown, Angelina Jolie's 2000 morticia adams-esq look, bjork's 2001 crazy swan getup, Julia Robert's 2001 black and white Valentino dress, or Halle Barry's 2002 gorgeous barely-there Elie Saab dress?!

what are some of your favorite oscar memories? nominated films? fashion? first celeb crushes?

xoxo,
jc dicaprio (jk!)

  3. OM Goodness... I also was convinced that I was going to marry Leo one day... I literally had it all planned out that when I was a bit older (I was 13 when titanic came out) we would run into eachother at a bar and start talking and he would fall madly in love with me haha... and that year I remember that I was Rose for halloween.

Too great!.. Brings back the greatest of memories, thanks for sharing!

    xoxo

  4. As much as I love to see what fashion is worn on the red carpet I have never been a big awards ceremony girl...I think I lack the patience to watch...but I do love me some Leo! :)

  5. I love awards shows too! Especially the Academy Awards...you should try to get tickets to the red carpet next year. They hold a lottery in September, so you have a while to figure out travel plans and stuff. It's soooo worth it! I went two years in a row and I absolutely loved it. The dresses are so different in person, and some of the stars are just so nice! And I have to agree...Leonardo is pretty damn amazing. *le sigh*

  15. Hi J! So funny- I remember the Titanic year as well! remember when LDC actually got upset and walked out?
I did sit next to him in traffic in DC once- he was in the back of a Town Car. Total Cutie.

  17. I love your honesty in this post! I too loved Titanic, I believe I saw it 3 times in the theater and watched it several times after. It evoked something inside me that my tween heart had never experienced before. I loved Leo and while I'm not really attracted to him anymore, he still is one of my favorite actors. Has he ever played a bad role?!

  18. sigh. another reason I love you and our friendship. I was also Titanic obsessed...so much so that when the artifact exhibit made its way east this past summer, I dragged Chris to see it. My fascination with the Oscars began back in the early 1990s, when I'd watch it on my spring breaks with my dear sweet grandmother. Her brother was in fashion, so I think I've been obsessed ever since. LOVE this post...xoxo {av}

  24. I don't really watch the Oscars but I do love seeing the fashion.

And don't be embarrassed about your first celebrity crush and I saw keep that necklace because it has sentimental value.

I loved Leo! In Romeo and Juliet. And I still love him to this day. Blood Diamond! And Inception. He's still hot.

My first crush though was Johnathan Taylor Thomas hahaha. But Leo was soon to be taking of that for a longgg time!! I still love that movie, and I love the Oscars :) Always have.

  32. I tallied the Titanic oscars too!! My best friend and I were both obsessed with Leo and would sigh over him during every sleepover we had. I was so excited about how many oscars Titanic would win you would have thought I made the movie myself.

  33. I wish I didn't jump on this train at the end...cause I'm a HUGE fan of the Oscars. The outfit that most sticks out to me is the Bjork one. Some of my favorite moments...or maybe not favorite, but most memorable was when Roberto Benigni won his award for Life is beautiful, I loved Charlize Theron's whole look when she won her Oscar, Julia Roberts acceptance speech when she bursted out laughing (her smile was super infectious), loved Mo'Nique's speech, when Adrian Brody made out with Halle Berry when he was getting his Oscar, and Sandy Bullock's speech will always be etched in my mind

  34. Haha this post made me laugh because I too had a giant crush on Leo--my friends and I even had a fan club, the LDC (you can probably guess what the initials stand for!).

Also, I love Sense and Sensibility and think it might be my favorite movie too (way better in my opinion than either version of Pride and Prejudice) :)
