no bangs for you.

last friday when i arrived at my hair appointment i was super excited. i worked up the courage and fought off haircut + bangs anxiety to ask my stylist if we could try something new. i wanted bangs! she let out a big sigh, then literally took a seat to tell me that i had a "small forehead, and bangs would squash down my face." shot down. so no bangs for me. i was disappointed but i guess it wasn't meant to be. so let's all admire some lovelies who have either a nice forehead or a nicer stylist...

so, i know my stylist was just doing her job and cutting my hair the way she thought it would look the best. in the end she gave me little swoopy bangs but i still wonder if full-on heavy bangs would have been the worst thing (i mean it is hair and i can grow them out or pin them back...)

on a brighter and less dramatic note, i had a pretty fantastic weekend! we got to hang out with old friends and enjoyed some tasty food. my newly engaged friend asked me to be one of her bridesmaids! and i am absolutely overjoyed to be included in their special day!!!  sunday was a rainy day so we spent most of it cuddled up :)  that night we ventured out to celebrate h's dad's birthday with dinner at a reallllly tasty Persian place. whew! lots of good food and quality time with friends and family :)

happy monday! be sure to hop over to blue-eyed belle today for my guest post about making yourself happy :)

  1. YAY for being a bridesmaid :D and sorry you didn't get bangs :( I had them once and hated them. Always in my face and you have to style them every morning. blah!

  2. wow, i'm surprised that your hairstylist flat out said no to bangs. and congrats for being chosen to be a bridesmaid!

    cute and little

  3. I have a tiny forehead too, and guess what?? I have bangs!! Cut them 2 years ago and can't ever go back!! Maybe you should try another hair stylist..I'm sure you will look great with bangs! I think bangs made my face look thinner and longer. They're my best friend now! lol I say go for it!!

  4. Hair is always such a struggle for me, I trust what my stylist says but I wonder if I should... if you really want them ,try someone else. If you get the same response twice, then maybe they know best?

  5. haha oh man...sometimes you have to give it to stylists for being brutally honest, but who knows, maybe bangs wouldn't be so bad? i know for me, it's more about my hair type than face type that keeps me from blunt bangs.

congrats on being in your friend's wedding! how fun! and what persian place did you try??

  6. I wanted bangs for a while, but I have curly hair and it would be a disaster. But I do love the look (sometimes). Bad thing about them is that they are a lot of upkeep! I feel that if my hair person is strongly against something, I listen to her because she knows what she is talking about.

  7. My hairstylist won't give me full on bangs either, due to a cowlick I was blessed with :( If you start with the swoop and persist in asking for a little more each time, maybe she'll indulge you!

  10. That's REALLY strange that she said no bangs. But it's better to be told you have a small forehead than a big one! LOL!

  11. I love the heavy bang.. gotta have a thick head of hair to pull it off though.

    Sounds like a great weekend!

  12. i haven't had bangs since college, but these pics make me yearn for em

  13. You could try gradually adapting your sideswept bangs into the real deal. Since you'll need trims every month or so anyway, you can play with the angle and go a little shorter and get an idea of how it will look before making a drastic change. Good luck!

  14. NO way! I have a small forehead too! With short sideswept bangs . . . depending on the day. Sometimes I do with my stylist would be more honest . . . but maybe I don't! Perhaps you should get a second opinion?!

  15. Wow, I can't believe the stylist gave you a flat out no...granted there were times when I've gotten bangs I wish my stylist would have put the kabosh on it (I have a really bad cowlick that makes fringe bangs pretty much impossible) :)

Mmm Persian food, that makes me hungry!

  16. I have a small forehead too and I had bangs for years....but its really up to you if you would like to try it...In the end of the day you can always pin in if it doesnt look great. So happy that you are going to be a bridesmaid..Fantastic! happy Monday, darling

  17. I absolutely LOVE bangs- the choppy cool ones like the blonde in your images today. Always wanted that look too. I have asked 3-4 times over the past few years 2 different stylists- both great both said NO!
My hair is too thick and naturally curly so I could never "get the look".

  18. i say GO FOR IT! your stylist just doesn't want to do something that could potentially not look good.
i have really curly thick hair and i wanted a bob so bad even though i knew it wouldn't be the "best" thing. now i'm so glad i did it (even though it really did look bad).
:) i'm going to be a bridesmaid too this summer! woo!

  19. I have been dying to take the plunge and get bangs also (I have a large forehead so I'm thinking this might be a good thing for me). The only thing holding me back is that my hair is not very long, just below my shoulders. I want the long hippy hair with bangs! My stylist has always been really honest with me too because I have thick hair and some styles just would not work. But if I want it bad enough i go ahead anyways and just deal if the style doesn't work out. I agree with you that hair grows fast (especially bangs) and it's not the end of the world. I think you should go for it!

  20. Hey love!!

Hair always grows back you know - so I think you should do what you want honestly :) Sometimes people just give their opinion, but it's your life, your hair!!

Yay for being a bridesmade :)

  21. I am sure your hair looks great and I think that you could pull off the full bangs. Glad you had a great weekend!

  22. I can't carry them off either...le sigh. But I SO wish I could!

  23. Funny that you wanted bangs, because I just went to the salon and had bangs cut last Tuesday! I'm still trying to adjust, it's hard. But thank GOODNESS for dry shampoo and smoothing creams. My forehead is kind of big, and I think my bangs bring out the blue in my eyes even more than without. I think I'm happy but I definitely had regrets after the first time I washed it and they got all frizzy and poofy like mom bangs. I went to Barbara & Barbara in Logan Square to have them cut, I got a cut, bangs, blowout AND a conditioning treatment AND a beer all for $37!!

  24. if you want bangs, go for it girl! Don't let the hair stylists change your mind! :) I know you could rock them!

  25. Go for it if you want them - I think they would look great! I can't believe she said no...isn't it your decision? Congrats on being a bridesmaid!

  26. THANK YOU all for the postive words of encouragement! i think i'll wait a month or two and go find another stylist and get them done!! happy monday! xoxo jcd

  27. I have a small forehead, too, and bangs do not look right on me.

You should feel lucky that you also have a small forehead instead of a "fivehead" or "sixhead" like most girls that have bangs also possess. I dunno, I'd rather be bangless than look like a Klingon.

  28. The thing about bangs is that until you try them, live with them, and really experience how bad they look on you, you'll never stop wanting them. This was certainly the case for me... told my whole life that my dainty forehead couldn't handle a fringe... I've spent the past year growing out my little experiment. Although I'm quite certain I'll never cut bangs again, you gotta at least try!

  31. hooray for being a bridesmaid!!! so much fun! boooo to no bangs (i say give it a whirl if you really want - you can pin them back as you say!)

  32. I love the look of a blunt bang...and kudos to you for wanting to try! I suffer from the same "small forehead" situation, however, I think it can still be done! Happy Monday~

  34. I am a hair stylist and I believe that you can have bangs with a smaller forehead. Her reaction makes no sense to me because I feel with a large forehead it is almost harder to rock the bangs. All she would need to do is start them a little further back to give the illusion of a fuller forehead. Give it another go! The only downside is they need to be cut pretty frequently. I know, I have them :)

  35. You have a great hairstylist if she told you the truth, instead of cutting your bangs and you looking bad.. I need one like that-

Let me tell you, I had bangs my whole life! I look back and think.. gross.. huge mistake.. not everyone can pull them off like these lovely ladies you posted!

  38. Sounds like a wonderful weekend, and horray for being a bridesmaid!

As for bangs, your stylist was just looking out for you, if a little aggressively. I got blunt bangs last year for my long forehead, and am still growing them out!

  40. it took me forever to get bangs again. so last november, i finally made the move. the last time i had bangs was when i was younger. i'm asian, so my memories of hangs were those straight ass cut that was done by my mother. my stylist started out with slight fringes, then asked me to come back if i wanted more. so far so good. bummer that she shot them down, but my stylist is the same way. he is always honest.

  42. i must sort of laugh at this because i have a small forehead too, and my stylists tell me the same thing, then i go and do it on my own. they are usually quite upset when i come in looking for them to "even them out". :-) hope you had a nice weekend!

  45. Great post, when I see gorgeous photos like the ones above, I always think I want bangs too...but the truth is with my very wavy hair, they just don't look right on me...I think longer ones are a good option though!

  46. I love bangs and think you would look hot in them. Maybe your stylist was right and not a "heavy" bang but a "fringe" style would look amazing on you! xo Samantha

  47. oh wow, sorta surprised your stylist didn't go for the bangs. I'm glad you're waiting a couple of months and going to try again! I say go for it. worst case scenario, they just grow back!

  48. I am going to get my haircut and am getting full on heavy 'bangs' (we call it a fringe here in New Zealand) - I have a big forehead though, so it works (not Rihanna big, but still bigger than I'd like).

  53. girl, get bangs! who cares if you have small forehead! you only live once and hair grows back. :) and change the hair dresser. she's surely nice, but she gets payed for what she does to your hair.
btw: you should see my driving license... my hairdresser didn't understand what i wanted and she made some sort of conceptual art on my head... it looks hilarious now, but it didn't back then. :)
